Massage FAQ's: What's the difference between lotion and oil ...

When I see clients, it is not a surprise but it is encouraged to have questions about our session especially if it’s a new client. Before our session and if there’s oil and lotion available, I’ll usually give a new client a selection to choose their preference will be. A few clients even asked what the difference between the two.

Professional-grade massage lotion, such as Biotone, provides more grip for massaging into deeper tissues. It’s texture is looser and lighter and for clients who prefer a less oily lubricant onto their skin. Professional-grade massage cream is richer in density than oil or lotion and provides more access into the massage tissues making it even more ideal for a deep tissue massage compared to the use of massage oil.

Massage oil is the best for modalities that don’t require deep tissue work with little or no friction such as a Swedish massage. A typical oil base consists of seed or nut oils. I prefer to use jojoba oil which is nut-free for clients with nut allergies and mimics sebum, the skin’s natural oil for the ideal natural moisturizer. Massage oil also can be considered a carrier oil if you wish to add a few drops of essential drops for aromatherapy during your massage session.

If you prefer oil, have your therapist provide you with a moist heat towel to towel off before you get dressed. This can come in handy especially if you are on your way back to work and won’t have a chance to rinse the oil off in the shower shortly.

How to decide

You could give either a try to compare and contrast the two.  However and based on what massage you usually get, Swedish or deep tissue, I think it will make it easier for you which will work best based on the modality and your preference.
